The Basics
Why Microbes
Soil is home to a vast community of naturally occurring microorganisms — bacteria, fungi and other microbes — that interact with plant roots in ways that have been studied in agricultural science for decades. Certain beneficial strains can help convert nutrients already present in soil into forms that plant roots are better able to take up.
Some bacterial groups are known to fix atmospheric nitrogen or solubilize phosphorus, while others compete with or suppress harmful pathogens around the root zone. Fungal partners, such as certain Trichoderma species, are widely studied for their role in protecting roots and supporting the wider soil microbial community.
Microbial biotechnology works by isolating, testing and formulating these naturally occurring organisms so they can be reintroduced to soil in reliable, field-usable form — supporting soil biology rather than replacing it.
